John Guy Powell, age 90, of West Lafayette, passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on December 23, 1932 in Carrolton, Ohio to the late Lewis D. and Jessie (Reed) Powell. He was a United States Army National Guard Veteran and then entered into the work force at General Electric. Over the 36 years, he worked his way up to foreman prior to his retirement. On June 26, 1953, he married Janet (Sherrick) Powell and they celebrated 70 years together. Growing up they traveled near and far, taking their 6 kids over the US on camping trips. For most of his life he was an avid rabbit and squirrel hunter. He was known for his love of Beagle dogs and had a special dog, Penny and cat, Smokey. He enjoyed bowling and achieved a perfect 300 game. He spent time with his many grandchildren and was happy to take them on tractor wagon rides over the farm in Fresno. He enjoyed golfing as well and loved to take his granddaughter Rachel with him to make memories.
Along with his wife, he is survived by his children, Lewis (Suzanne) Powell of West Lafayette, Patricia (Kenny) Brown of Dresden, John Michael (Kathy) Powell of Coshocton, David Powell of West Lafayette, Sandy (Bob) Lee of Mogadore and Jamie Powell of Massillon; 21 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren with one to arrive in January; siblings, Jim (Kaye) Powell of Sebring, Fl. and Louissa (Marc) Geese of Fresno.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandchildren, Karalee Powell and Krista Powell and siblings, Donald Powell, Charles Powell, Thelma Rosalie Cochran Goss and Evangeline Guthrie Zimmerman.
Calling hours will be at The Miller Funeral Home on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 4pm to 6pm. A memorial service will begin at 6pm at the funeral home with Pastor Chris Cutshall officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Animal Shelter or Interim Hospice, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
