Dick J. Tompkins

Richard J. “Dick” Tompkins, 81, of Coshocton, surrounded by his immediate family, he was welcomed into Heaven on April 4, 2018 after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents James and Nell (Burrell) Tompkins of Coshocton and a sister Joanne Lipskey.

He was adored by his wife of 61 years Martha (Thiessen) Tompkins; son Steven (Shelly) Tompkins; grandsons Steve (Emily) and Nathan; great grandchildren Anna, Ellie, Lennon, Silas and Marley Tompkins all of Coshocton; he will also be missed by sisters Terry (Stan) Kaczmar and Virgina Darling; many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Dick was born on December 30, 1936 and raised in Canal Lewisville, he attended area schools and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and immediately entered the U.S. Air Force.  He proudly served his country for 20 years.  While serving he received his Master’s Degree from the Michigan State University.  He and his wife were stationed many places around the world including Germany where he audited Air Force bases.  He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.  After retirement, Dick and his family returned to Coshocton where he was elected as the county auditor for many terms.  During the same time, he founded the accounting firm of Tompkins and Associates.

Dick was extremely passionate about military history.  He was an avid Civil War enthusiast and traveled extensively visiting battle fields.  His favorite pastimes included playing racquetball, socializing with friends and being in the outdoors.  Later in life he took on the role as leader of his extended family making sure to pass on family lore, genealogy and his father’s magic tricks.  One of his favorite stories he liked to tell was about a canal boat captain who was looking for his green faced watch.  He was active in the local Democratic Party and was a true and true Democrat.  He was a faithful servant of God and was a lifelong member of the Canal Lewisville United Methodist Church.  Dick was also an animal lover who would take in any animal who needed a loving home.

He was an easy going and gentle person who was always humble and kind.  He traveled through life leaving his mark on all who encountered him.

Friends may call at The Miller Funeral Home, 639 Main St., Coshocton on Monday April 9, 2018 from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM and one hour prior to the memorial service at the church on Tuesday.  A memorial service will be held at the Canal Lewisville United Methodist Church, 198 E. Church St., Coshocton on Tuesday at 1:00 PM with Pastor Wesley George officiating.  Interment will follow in Canal Lewisville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can kindly be made to Coshocton County Animal Shelter and/or Canal Lewisville United Methodist Church, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
