Surrounded by his family and listening to the words of one of his favorite hymns, Dr. Donald Potts joined his beloved wife Juanita in their Heavenly home on Thursday, August 31, following an extended illness.
Don was born on December 19, 1929 in Audubon, NJ. He was a graduate of Audubon High School, Asbury College (Wilmore, KY), and Jefferson Medical School (Philadelphia, PA). Following his residency at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and his service as a Naval physician at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, Don practiced medicine in Pittsburgh, PA and Louisville, KY before sharing in a thriving family practice in West Lafayette, OH and finishing his medical career as director of emergency at Coshocton Memorial Hospital, in Coshocton, OH. During his time in West Lafayette and Coshocton, Don also served as county coroner and as athletic team physician and school board president at Ridgewood Local Schools
In addition to his medical career, Don was an active member at Newcomerstown United Methodist Church and Coshocton Church of the Nazarene. He loved singing, raising and showing St. Bernards, woodworking, traveling, and spending time with his family. From the gum ball machines made for his young grandchildren to the blanket chests made as wedding gifts for those same grandchildren, the many wooden items Don lovingly crafted for his family and friends will be cherished by many for years and generations to come.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Juanita (Horstman), parents Hugh and Lillian Potts, and sisters Naomi, Ruth (Perry), and Doris (Fish). He is survived by sons David (Joan) Potts of Ft. Myers, FL, Daniel (Melinda) Potts of Tipp City, OH, Douglas (Kimberlee) Potts of Louisville, OH, and Deric Potts of Coshocton, OH, daughter Joanie (Tim) Garber of Centerburg, OH, grandchildren Chris (Erin) Potts, Sara (Lawrence) Vissers, Rachel (Courtney) Simpson, Justin (Carrie) Potts, Jordan Potts, Jenny (David) Thanepohn, Jandi Potts, Kristee (Alan) Giron, Brian (Sarah) Potts, Jaclyn (David) Ludwig, Bruce (Brooke) Potts, Brittany Potts, Austin Garber, Carrington Garber, and Emily Garber, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours for Dr. Potts will be held at Miller Funeral Home, 639 Main St, Coshocton, OH on Friday, September 8, from 5-7pm. A service celebrating his life and home-going will be at 1pm on Saturday, September 9, at Miller Funeral Home.
