George H. Torman, Jr. (92) passed away June 22, 2023 at his home in the Primrose Retirement Community in Zanesville, OH. He was born January 11, 1931, the son of the late George H. Torman, Sr. and Beatrice Wilbur Torman.
He was married on June 26, 1954 to Mary Kent Torman, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter Georgeanne (Gigi) (Tom) Hammond, Warsaw, OH, son Steve Torman, Cottageville, WV, brother Donald Torman, Union, Il, grandchildren Stephen Hammond of Milwaukee, WI, Rachel Hammond of Singapore and Jason (Montanna) Hammond of Coshocton. Also surviving is a sister-in-law Martha Kent Jones as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a sister, Frances Gies and brother, William Torman and brother-in-law and best friend M. Donald Jones.
George graduated from Woodstock Community High School in Woodstock, Il. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps., where he attained the rank of Sargent. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mannington WV where he served on many committees and was a member of the choir. George was a store manager for FW Woolworth in the Chicago area and a WV Master Electrician, retiring from Consolidated Coal Co. He worked after retirement for the D&G Machine Shop. He and his brother-in-law had a business rebuilding mine equipment. He was a long-time member of the Mannington VFD and American Legion.
At Primrose, George, with several other gentlemen, built 8 doll houses that were donated to various charities in the Zanesville area. He also participated in the bell choir.
Miller Funeral Home in Coshocton and Hutson Funeral Home in Mannington, WV are handling the arrangements. Per his request there will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at the Wadestown Cemetery, Wadestown, WV at a later date.
