Irwin R. Gibson, 99 and nine-months, of Coshocton passed away Monday October 7, 2024, at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Marion, Ohio on January 10, 1925, to the late Harry A. and Emma Jane (Johnson) Gibson.
On June 7, 1947, he married the love of his life, Josephine "Jo" (Angel) Gibson, Jo passed away on December 19, 2023, they were married 76 years.
Irwin honorably, and with great patriotism served in the United States Army during WWII. Even today, he has shrapnel still in his leg and hand from a firefight in in Italy when Irwin was only 18 years old. When Irwin was called to serve, Irwin served our county without hesitation, a true, American Patriot. While serving our country, Irwin earned Good Conduct Medal, Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal and a Purple Heart. Irwin was also knighted as a Sir from France, the highest civilian medal of honor for helping to liberate France.
He retired from the US Army Corp of Engineers as a project superintendent at Wills Creek Lake
Irwin was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Coshocton, and a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge in Gallipolis, Ohio. Gibby was a long-member of the Coshocton County Veterans Honor guard having participated in 622 military funerals since 1998. Gibby also enjoyed feeding squirrels on his back porch and putting together puzzles. One puzzle framed and hanging on the wall was made from a photo of Jo and Gibby taken on Christmas a few years ago.
He is survived by his three children Reda K. (Harold) Fowler of Bidwell, OH, Connie Sue (Bob) Bowers of Beach City, OH, and Randy (Marcie) Gibson of Coshocton, OH; grandchildren Amy Jo (Rob) Barrick of Ashville, OH, Robbie (Rachael) Bowers of Bolivar, OH, Ryan (Emily) Bowers of Akron, OH, Andrea (Matthew) Unger of Coshocton, OH, and Michael (Jenna) Gibson of Fresno, OH; great grandchildren Taylor Barrick (Andrew Pemberton), Madison Barrick, Bobby James Bowers, Zachary B Howell, Reid A. Howell, Brady R. Howell, Wyatt M. Unger, Gatlin M. Gibson, Riley J. Bowers, Milo M. Bowers, and Owen R. Bowers; sister-in-law Norma Gibson; ½ sister Nellie Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his son Michael Ray Gibson; daughter-in-law Kathy Gibson; grandson Parker J. Gibson; two brothers Earl S. and Donald P. Gibson; three sisters Velma Marshall, Geneva Cassborro and Rachel Gibson.
Friends may call at The Miller Funeral Home, 639 Main Street, Coshocton, Ohio on Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 11:00am - 1:00pm with funeral services beginning at 1:00pm with Pastor Larry Fox and Pastor Sam Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Franklin Cemetery where Coshocton County Veterans Honor Guard will perform military honors.
