James "Rodney" Vance, 80, of West Lafayette, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 21, 2015.
He was born in Coshocton, Ohio on December 26, 1934, to the late James E. Vance and Mary (Bonnett) Slaughter. A day that he always referred to, as "a tough act to follow".
Rodney was a 1952 Coshocton High School graduate, and retired from the Coshocton County Engineer's Office on December 31, 1999. Previous jobs, which he truly enjoyed, were with Bayne Simpson Surveying, The Coshocton Land Surveying Service, and Hitchens and Associates. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge.
Rodney is survived by his wife Karen "Sue" Vance, whom he married on June 22, 1998; daughters Jade (Bill) Scott of Huntington, West Virginia, and Jana (Fred) Abraham of Sun River, Montana; step-sons Christopher (Shelly) Shaw of Santa Rosa, California, and Jason (Mickie) Shaw of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren Lauren (Chris) Barker of Dresden, and Jason Garrett; step-grandchildren Ashley and Riley Shaw, and Bethany Grace Shaw; half-sister Cindy (Gary) Wagner of FL; father-in-law Raymond Bailey of Coshocton; and brother-in-law Steve Bailey Sr. of West Lafayette.
He was preceded in death by a step-brother Karl Meek Slaughter, and a step-sister Ann Hopkins.
Per Rodney's wishes, a cremation will take place, and a private graveside service will be held at Fairfield Cemetery, West Lafayette, at a later date.
