Jerry Porteus, 75 of West Lafayette, passed away Monday, February 6, 2017 at his home surrounded by family members.
He was born January 26, 1942, to the late Wayne and Helen (Gaumer) Porteus.
Jerry was a 1960 graduate of West Lafayette High School. He earned his Bachelors in Education from Union College and Masters of Education from Xavier University.
He began his career in education, teaching social studies and driver's education. A former High School athlete, he enjoyed the Head Coach position at Tri-Valley (Dresden) and Garaway (Sugarcreek) and assistant football coach at River View Local Schools, Lakewood (Hebron), Coshocton, and Ridgewood School Districts.
The later part of his career was in administration, serving as Principal at Ridgewood elementary and Junior High as well as interim superintendent for the district.
Following retirement he worked at Coshocton Job and Family Services and later opened his own small business washing private and commercial windows.
He was a forty-six year member of the Elks # 376 and a member of the West Lafayette Masonic Lodge # 602 and spent six years as West Lafayette Democratic Central Committeeman.
A life-long outdoors man, he claimed title into the Ohio Big Buck Club in 2010. He finally perfected his homemade wine, taking Best of Show at the Coshocton County Fair in 2014.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Linda (Hill) Porteus, married August 5, 1967; daughters Jennifer (John) Campbell of Illinois and Jana Porteus of Arizona.
Grandchildren Lindsey and Lucas (Campbell) and sister Brenda Corelis of California.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his sister Kathy Zak.
Friends may call at the Miller Funeral Home, 639 Main St. Coshocton on Friday February 10, 2017 from 4:00PM – 8:00PM and one hour prior to the funeral service. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00AM with Pastor Dan Eggan officiating. Burial of cremated remains will follow at Fairfield Cemetery, West Lafayette.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed towards: The American Heart Association, The Coshocton Relay for Life, The West Lafayette United Methodist Church- Roof Fund or Community Hospice.
Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
