Lula E. Williams, age 103, passed away on Thursday, October 10th. She was born on June 27, 1921 in Youngstown, Ohio to the late Samuel and Matilda (Smiley) Sheffield. She grew up in Coshocton and graduated from Coshocton High in the class of 1938. Then she briefly attended a local business college.
On February 9, 1941, Lula married Charles R. "Chappie" Williams, and together they proudly raised three children. Lula and Chappie remained married until his untimely death in 2006.
Lula worked at a variety of places, including Roscoe Village, O'Neils, Leech, Scherbel and Peddicord, and she retired from Ohio Power. Her jobs were important to her for the people she met, but they were not her career. Lula's career was in community service.
Lula co-founded, headed, and served on key boards and committees for many organizations over 70 years. She gave time, energy and financial support to the arts, charities, and service organizations. She was also a faithful member of The Presbyterian Church, where she was eager to help, wherever needed.
Lula is survived by her children, Michael Williams and Lynda Williams Jones; grandchildren, Andrea "Andi" Williams, Demia (Kojo) Kandi, Anika (Jamaal) Williams Shabazz, Kimani Clodfelder, and "bonus" grand-daughter, Kristin (Marco) Curtis; as well as 10 great-grandchildren: Donovan and Alexa Williams; Dorian, Khary and Kennedy Kandi; Nia and Malik Chandler; Dequan and Nishon Wooten, and Nyles Curtis.
Along with her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Carole Williams Clodfelder, siblings, Charles Graham, Vivian Saunders, Mary Louise Anderson, John Graham, William Graham, Sam Sheffield, Mildred Taylor, Claude Sheffield, Geneva Taylor, and Maurice Sheffield.
Lula was a strong family advocate and will be fondly remembered for her kindness, warm smile, sharp wit, and loving spirit by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and mutually devoted friends.
