Melvin Scherer

October 11, 1913 — October 12, 2014

Melvin R. Scherer, of West Lafayette died peacefully Sunday October 12, 2014, the day after celebrating his 101st birthday.

Melvin was born near Fresno, Ohio on October 11, 1913 to the late Oscar and Minnie (Hahn) Scherer.

On October 29, 1941 he married Irene (Honabarger) Scherer who survives. In addition Melvin is survived by a daughter, Sandra K. Scherer of the home, a brother Glenn Scherer of Baltic, and many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers; Phoebe Deich, Gladys Stein, Twila Welling, Mary Stilgenbaur, Velma Grant, Henry, Oscar, Howard, and Arthur Scherer.

Melvin was a member of the United States Army during World War II from 1942-1945 serving in the South Pacific.  He and his family resided in Columbus, Ohio from 1952-1963. A lifelong member of the Renner’s St. Paul United Church of Christ, Melvin enjoyed maintaining the slate roof of the church as well as assisting in upkeep and maintenance for the church and church grounds well into his later years in life. Melvin’s passion in life was his work.  He was employed by Stone Container, Wentz Concrete, Power Shop, and Best Heating and Cooling, retiring in 1988.

A funeral service will be held Thursday October 16, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Renner’s St. Paul United Church of Christ with Reverend Dr. Jim Henninger officiating. Interment will follow at Renner’s Cemetery.  Friends may visit the family one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Renner’s St. Paul United Church of Christ cemetery fund, envelopes will be available at the church.

Melvin’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Lafayette Pointe as well as the Union Hospital staff for providing compassionate care to Melvin. Your kindness is deeply appreciated.
