Jean Ruby

September 4, 1938 — December 6, 2024

Sonja J. Ruby, affectionately known as “Jean” was born on September 4, 1938 in Coshocton County, passed away on Friday December 6, 2024. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Nathan E. Ruby on July 15, 1997, as well as her parents, Ernest Cochran and Georgia (Darr) Stingle.

Jean put dedication and effort into her home where she raised three boys with Nathan, her one true love. She worked at Ritchey’s carryout on 7th Street for a number of years. Together they overcame many hardships and obstacles. The life they built together was a source of great pride. She was a talented cook and gifted baker who showed her love through homemade pies, cookies and treats from her kitchen.

Jean’s upbringing fostered tenacity, determination and a feisty strong will. Mothering rowdy boys honed her sharp wit, sense of humor and bred familiarity with broken arms and scraped knees. As the extended family grew, she continued to share love through hosting weekly dinners and Christmas Eve gatherings. Her grandchildren have many fond memories of time spent at Grandma Ruby’s house with their grandparents. She was also a steadfast friend to her small circle of ladies.

She is survived by her sons: John (Andrea) Ruby of West Lafayette, Kevin (Jackie) Ruby of Coshocton, and James (Stephanie) Ruby of Coshocton. Her grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) Ruby, Tonya Rine, Thomas “T.J.” (Tonya) Ruby, Jessica Hunt, Nathan (Alicia) Ruby, Brian (Keri) Ruby, Kaitlin (Tyler) Knecht and Mason Ruby are a living tribute to her fortitude. She also rejoiced in the presence of thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, who will remember her affectionately.

A family graveside memorial service for Jean will be held at Plainfield Cemetery at a later date with Steve Young officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 16810, Columbus, Ohio 43216-6810. The Miller Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for the family.
