Tunis "Tuny" S. Elson 94 of Coshocton, passed away at Coshocton Memorial Hospital on Friday February 18th, 2011. Tunis was born and raised in Coshocton on February 22, 1916 to the late Tunis "Polly" S. Elson and Lena (Wilson) Elson. Tunis graduated from Coshocton High School in 1934, and attended business college in Columbus. From 1936 to 1946 he served as billing clerk in the accounting department at the Ohio Power Co. He resigned this position to accept employment at the Muskingum Fiber Co. plant where he was employed from 1946 to1954. Mr. Elson worked two years at the Hunt-Crawford plant. He then took position with the General Electric Company. Then for ten years he was a Department Head at the J.J. Newberry Co. store. In1981, he retired as manager of the local State Liquor store. He was a Councilman in 1943 and served six terms as City Treasure before running for County Treasure in 1968. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge #96 and was Past Master in 1947. He is also a member of the Elks B.P.O.E. 376, Eagles 761 and the old VFW 1330. He is a member of The Presbyterian Church of Coshocton. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Esther M. (Brillhart) Elson to whom he married on December 21, 1940; two son's Larry (Mary) Elson of Delaware, Ohio and Tom (Sharron) Elson of Zanesville; one grandson Darin Elson; two great-grandchildren Dylan and Emmarae Elson all of Marion, Ohio; one niece Donna Dodge of Ann Arbor, MI. Along with his parents, Tunis was preceded in death by his sister Yvonne and two half sisters. Friends may call at Miller Funeral Home, 639 Main St., Coshocton on Monday February 21, 2011 from 5-7 PM with Masonic services starting at 7:00 PM and Elks services starting at 7:15 PM. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Tuesday at11AM with Rev. Jonathan T. Carlisle officiating. Interment will follow in South Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Presbyterian Church of Coshocton Abiding Fund in Tunis's name, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
